The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), will demonstrate its support of the City of Boston with three free days of art and family fun during Memorial Day Community Weekend—Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27. The event, called “Boston I Love,” will bring the community together to celebrate the spirit of the city in the wake of the attack at the Boston Marathon. Visitors from Boston and beyond will be able to enjoy special exhibitions, including the debut of three paintings lent to the MFA by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in honor of the people of Boston. Additionally, quilt squares from around the world offering messages of love and peace will be displayed in the installation To Boston With Love. The weekend will also feature a collaborative art-making activity in which visitors will create their own pictures to be added to an ever-expanding community collage at the MFA.

Maud Morgan Arts Summer Classes

“Kids and clay go together like peanut butter and chocolate,” says Maud Morgan Arts ceramics teacher Tiffany Playford. When the summer heat strikes, students at Maud Morgan Arts have the opportunity to dip their hands into cool, slippery clay every weekday afternoon under the guidance of Playford and her colleagues-in-clay. However, clay is only half the story. Students in the 5th through 9th grades enjoy two hours of ceramics and two hours of drawing, painting sculpture or printmaking taught by professional artists every week. Come build a pop-up book, personalize a t-shirt or make a kite that can really fly.

Outback Summer Program

Outback Summer Program provides a high-quality summer experience for families who value creativity, culture and community. We specialize in building community through creative explorations. Our neighborhood location and large backyard are the perfect setting for children to build friendships and express their individuality, and our teachers strive to make every child feel welcome. Through daily activities in drama, sports, visual arts, science, dance, gardening, cooking, music, and more, we inspire children to let their imaginations guide them! There are also weekly field trips to local beaches, and 5th and 6th graders may sign up for afternoon intensive art classes at Maud Morgan Arts. Outback Summer Program runs from July 1st through August 23rd. Children may sign up for single weeks or for all eight weeks. Registration is available online at www.agassiz.org or at 20 Sacramento Street in Cambridge.

Kid-Curated Art Show: The Future

Step into the Chandler Gallery, and you will see the future. Not only is “The Future” the theme of the current show, but the exhibition is curated entirely by elementary school students from Agassiz Baldwin Community’s afterschool program—children who represent the world’s future artists, curators and gallery-owners. This project-based learning activity is a unique opportunity for children to experience the gallery process. “Children know that they can take their artwork home and show it to their parents,” says Early Education Site Director Kim Baldasaro. “But they learn that they could also share their artwork with other people in a gallery.” Children plan the exhibition from start to finish: they choose a theme, they work in teams to collaborate on 2D and 3D pieces, and they install the show in the gallery. The opening reception will be held at 5:45 p.m. on June 12.

ECMS Student Lego Art Exhibit and Reception

Sixth and seventh graders from the Ephraim Curtis Middle School have created some very unique works of art on display in the Children's Room of the Sudbury Goodnow Public Library through the month of May. There will be a reception for the community on May 30th from 5:00-7:00. The students worked in teams to create 2-dimensional, pixilated reproductions of famous works of art with Lego bricks. Once this exhibit is completed, the works will be on display at the Boston Children's Hospital. This project exposes children to contemporary art and the idea of using commonplace items in new contexts to create visual and interactive experiences. It also provides an avenue to explore iconic works of art and for students to give back to the community. "This program is supported in part by a grant from the Sudbury cultural council), a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency."

The opening reception will be held at 5:45 p.m. on June 12.

Maud Morgan Spring Classes

A startling juxtaposition of ideas: sometimes that’s all it takes to kick-start creativity. How much easier it is to pick up a pencil when a teacher, instead of saying, “draw something,” offers the prompt: “draw a peanut butter sandwich resting on the ocean floor.” At Maud Morgan Arts, an epicenter of creativity unto itself, the spring session features classes that provide more than prompts; these courses stretch the imagination across multiple mediums to send students galumphing down new avenues of artistic expression in the belief that all students can surprise themselves with their own art.

Registration is now open for spring classes at Maud Morgan Arts. Classes for all ages, preschoolers through adults. Special April vacation week workshops and weekend intensives.
