Bernarda Alba

Based on Federico Garcia Lorca's 1936 play The House of Bernarda Alba, this masterwork by Michael John LaChiusa, composer of such critically acclaimed hits as The Wild Party and Marie Christine, originally debuted at Lincoln Center. Bernada Alba a tells the tales of a powerful matriarch, who imposes a strict rule on her household following her second husband's funeral: "Not a breath of outside air is going to enter this house. It's going to feel like we've bricked up the doors and windows," she proclaims. Bernarda's five daughters, however, struggle with her cold wishes. The girls' dreams and desires challenge their mother's harsh rules and the outside world begins to slowly permeate their isolated existence. It is a unique and challenging piece of theatre, that the young company could't be more excited to bring to Stoneham Theatre's stage, in the hands of its talented act 3 performers and its director, Christopher James Webb.

Jekyll & Hyde

An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. This gothic musical plays with the juicier aspects of Victorian melodrama, yet still features a powerful rock score.

BROOKstock II: Where the ‘60’s Meet 2013

Brookline Music School (BMS) ensembles and young emerging artists from Brookline will perform a variety of classic songs and original music at A Music Festival for Brookline, BROOKstock II: Where the ‘60’s Meet 2013 concert on Saturday, June 1st at 7:30pm in the Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College.

Brookline Music School’s Rock/Jazz ensembles will perform music from the 1960’s, an amazing decade of American popular music, which laid the foundation for all that followed. Original music from Brookline's most promising young bands, singer/songwriters, and composers, such as Big Words, Next Best Western, Fluffington, and Bella Ortiz-Ren will also be featured. BROOKstock II seeks to contrast music from the 1960’s with music being created here and now by today's young musicians. The similarities and differences between the two will certainly shape an exciting and entertaining evening of live music.

The Aquarium has been providing free lectures and films by scientists, environmental writers, photographers and others since 1972. The Aquarium Lecture Series is presented free to the public through the generosity of the Lowell Institute, which has been providing funding for free public lectures at universities and museums since 1836.

Lectures are free and open to the public. Registration is requested. All programs start at 7 p.m. in the Aquarium's Harborside Learning Lab unless otherwise noted. Get general directions to the Aquarium, and use this map to find the Harborside Learning Lab (pdf). Programs last approximately one hour and are followed by a reception. Most lectures are recorded and available for viewing on our YouTube channel.
